Welcome to the Melbourne CBD SQL PASS Chapter. We are a SQL Server special interest group that forms part of the Victoria .NET Dev SIG.

We meet at lunch time 12:15PM for a 12.30PM start and finish at 2.00PM mostly on the 2nd Monday of each month at:

Saxons Training Facility.

A broad overview of several topics with database performance implications.

  • Cluster key and index strategy.
  • When is a index used versus table scan?
  • What is the overhead of the Numeric data type?
  • Network roundtrip minimization, when is enough?
  • What should I know about the SQL Server Cost Based Optimizer?
  • How does the Query Optimizer use data distribution statistics?
  • Variables and Parameters, parameter sniffing. Recompile strategies.
  • How to handle search with mulitple optional parameters.
  • Temp tables versus table variables.
  • Query hints.

About Joe

Joe is a Solid Quality Mentor. Joe Chang specializes in quantitative performance analysis. His work includes a reverse engineered map of the SQL Server query optimizer,and studies of parallel execution plan scaling characteristics on NUMA systems. Joe has several SQL Server performance tools, particularly for automating the analysis of execution plans, and cross-referenceing index usage by SQL and execution plan.
